Janis Cole's film 'P4W' is screening at the Hot Docs Film Festival

Film still of a woman's face
Saturday, April 29, 2017 - 10:15am

Janis Cole and Holly Dale should be written into history as one of Canada’s most iconic duos. The pair explore the margins of society, going beyond the middle-class concerns of much mainstream feminism. They’ve turned their camera on sex workers (Hookers on Davis) and the criminally insane (Thin Line). And in P4W: Prison for Women, Cole and Dale look at the lives of five incarcerated women. P4W isn’t sensationalized or rooted in an exploitative voyeurism, which is a key feature of Cole and Dale’s work. (As Dale once said, their docs give a “voice to our friends who weren't ashamed of who they were or what they did.”) Instead, P4W affirms the complexities of humanity, which ends up being, in the words of critic Anne Brodie (who championed the film), “powerful, funny and revelatory.” Kiva Reardon
