2020 Call for Submissions: Journal of Visual & Critical Studies

The Journal of Visual & Critical Studies collects and celebrates some of the best undergraduate academic writing at OCAD University. Comprising exhibition and performance reviews, critical essays, and thesis abstracts, this anthology challenges the boundaries of art history and visual studies in order to produce innovative relationships between art, design, and academic at OCAD U and beyond.

We encourage students to submit work that they have written for courses and would feel proud to share. The Editorial Committee is seeking submissions from all current OCAD U students in the following formats:

Exhibition and Performance Reviews [250 to 500 words]
Reviews of exhibitions, performances or art-related events that happened after April 2019. We welcome reviews that are local, national, or international in scope.

Critical Essays [1000 to 2000 words]
We publish academic essays about art, design, and visual studies. We are open to a wide range of methods and analyses, including experimental writing on aesthetic experiences and interdisciplinary research. We accept excerpts from larger essays.

Submission Guidelines
Submissions should be sent either as an email attachment, to visualcriticalstudies@gmail.com. Writing should be submitted as a Word Document (.doc or .docx). Chicago style citations are encouraged!

In your submission email please provide a 1 to 2 sentence biography that includes your name, your program, the year of your program, and a few details about your research interests and/or studio practice.

ABOUT JOURNAL OF VISUAL & CRITICAL STUDIES:
The Journal of Visual & Critical Studies collects and celebrates some of the best undergraduate academic writing at OCAD University. Comprising critical essays, exhibition reviews, artist portfolios, creative non-fiction, and thesis abstracts from students across all disciplines, this annual publication reflects the unique approaches to art history and visual culture that are being undertaken here. We value and emphasize interdisciplinary research methods and modes of thinking to provide diverse perspectives. The JVCS welcomes new editorial committee members every year, offering students the opportunity to help sustain the publication through peer-to-peer education about the publishing process.

SOFT-COVER BOOKBINDING WORKSHOP

Wednesday, January 29, 2020 - 2:00pm to 4:00pm

Learn the basics of softcover bookbinding to give your zines and publications a handmade touch! This workshop will cover folded bindings, pamphlet stitch and Japanese stab binding. If you have a special paper that you would like to use for the cover or for the interior pages, bring it with you! Otherwise, all material is provided. Maximum attendance is 12, first come, first served. The workshop is open to OCAD U students and is free, including materials.

INTRODUCTION TO SELF PUBLISHING

Join us in the OCAD U Library's Learning Zone for a basic introduction to self publishing!

 

Whether you’ve never made a zine or if you’re a seasoned self-publisher looking for more options, this workshop will help outline the possibilities of self-publishing, big and small. This introduction to self-publishing will share skills and suggestions in planning your publication, choosing a production method and setting a reasonable price for your work. Open to all current OCAD U students.

Join us in the OCAD U Library's Learning Zone for a basic introduction to Adobe Photoshop!

For those who learn best in person, this simple and casual introduction will give you enough skills to start working with Photoshop (and suggest resources to develop more specialized skills down the line). This presentation is intended for current OCAD U students who are new to the software and will provide an overview to basic file types, tools and adjustments. Bring your laptop to follow along, a notebook to take notes, and any questions you have. We're not experts, but we're happy to introduce you to this useful and powerful tool of image editing!

Holiday OCAD Artist Alley 2019

Sunday, December 15, 2019 - 1:00pm to 7:00pm

Come to OCAD's student-run Holiday Artist Alley! You'll find a wide variety of beautiful posters, prints, zines, stickers, greeting cards, ceramics, fashion, jewelry items and more from local creators. Support 50+ OCAD U artists and alumni.

This event is open to the public so come by and support local artists! FREE ADMISSION!

Remember to BRING CASH as most artists do not have card readers. There are ATMs in the building.
We are a wheelchair accessible space. Please take the (main lobby backside) elevators to the 2nd floor.

The OCAD U Poetry Society presents our first poetry slam. This event will determine the team that represents OCAD U at the College Unions Poetry Slam Invitational (CUPSI) at Virginia Commonwealth University (April 15 to 18, 2020).

Interested poets would need 3 poems each under 3 minutes.

ABOUT OCAD U POETRY SOCIETY:
The OCAD U Poetry Society is a collective of students from all backgrounds and writing levels who gather to discuss, collaborate and experiment with poetic forms. They facilitate workshops, performances and outings. The Society is also responsible for creating and facilitating the OCAD U Poetry Slam Team which will compete at The College Union Poetry Slam Invitational (CUPSI), an annual Poetry Slam tournament put on by the Association of College Unions International (ACUI) in which teams of four or five college students from different colleges and universities compete against each other in the United States. The society is mentored by Professors Ian Keteku and Lillian Allen.

Queer Print Club is where print culture meets queer culture. The group is open to OCAD U students, faculty and staff. No printmaking experience is necessary. Members will have access to technical instruction, studio support and equipment in the printmaking studios during monthly drop-in studio times and build networks through community events.
