Dumpling Discourse is a professional development circle for BIPOC artists and designers. The focus for these workshops is to provide OCAD students with informal mentorship and guidance, specifically for emerging creative practitioners who experience marginalization, racialization, and under-representation within their respective field of practice. 

Mobilization strategies, safety tactics, and lived experiences will be shared over dim sum (Rosewood Asian Cuisine), lead by Basil Alzeri, Ian Kamau, Immony Men, and April Xie. The facilitators of this event will ensure that the design of these conversational spaces are safe, inclusive, and respectful, to ensure that the participants of this workshop are comfortable with sharing their concerns, experiences, and curiosities about employment within academic environments and creative workspaces.

This event is hosted by Public Visualization Lab, with generous support from OCAD University’s Centre for Emerging Artists and Designers, Office of the Provost, Faculty of Liberal Arts and Interdisciplinary Sciences and the Digital Futures Undergraduate Program.

From student-run group OCAD U STUDENT PRESS:
The Yellow Staircase is an iconic interior space at OCAD U, displaying the energy and vitality of the student body. It is the structural spine of 100 McCaul, connecting all faculties and floors. Students are drawn to this arena, expressing a range of thoughts, feelings, and moods. OCAD U is a school with very little common areas for students to exchange and collaborate together; add commuter culture, high stress levels, living costs and you have cause for concern that students can feel isolated and frustrated with university culture.

Launched in 2018, the Yellow Staircase Yearbook mural project challenges these issues through the annual addition of four murals in The Yellow Staircase. Instead of condemning artistic expression and continuously painting over graffiti, we seek to turn this phenomenon into a positive and community-minded project, taking advantage of how the staircase is currently functioning in the interest of the school and the student body.

We are currently seeking proposals for murals by current OCAD University students or student collectives that creatively represent a student community or an official student group at the school. Successful proposals will receive a flat fee of $250 which includes the artist fee and money for materials. The Student Press will provide ladders, drop cloths, and will prime the mural surface with white paint.


1. Students may submit as individual artists or as groups.

2. The murals must be painted between 18 March and 19 April, 2019.

3. The murals will be painted between Levels 5 and 6 in the Yellow Staircase.

4. The average mural size is 5x4 feet, but you are welcome to suggest other dimensions. Your mural does not have to be rectangular!

5. You can use acrylic paint, or acrylic paint markers to create the mural. Spray paint can not be used.

Proposals should be emailed to contact@ocadustudentpress.com with the subject line “Yellow Staircase Proposal”. Any images included should be attached to the email, or you may provide a link to a Google Drive folder. Please email us if you have any questions about submitting!

In your submission, please include the following:

1. A sketch of the mural design.

2. A photo of the yellow staircase wall space between Levels 5 and 6 that you would like to use. Please make sure some identifiable graffiti is visible so that we can locate it.

3. A one to two sentence artist biography that includes your name(s) and program(s).

4. A short artist statement that explains what student community the mural represents and how. For examples of the communities represented last year, please see the murals below.

YELLOW staircase murals call for submissions

The Journal of Visual & Critical Studies (JVCS) collects and celebrates some of the best undergraduate academic writing at OCAD University. Comprising exhibition and performance reviews, critical essays, and thesis abstracts, this anthology challenges the boundaries of art history and visual studies in order to produce innovative relationships between art, design, and academia at OCAD U and beyond. Contributors will be invited to the Journal’s launch as a part of GradEx 2019.

We encourage students to submit work that they have written for courses and would feel proud to share with the OCAD U Community. The Editorial Committee is seeking submissions from all current OCAD U students in the following formats:

Exhibition and Performance Reviews [250 to 500 words]:
Reviews of exhibitions, performances or art-related events that happened after April 2018. We welcome reviews that are local, national, or international in scope.

Critical Essays [1000 to 2000 words]:
We publish academic essays about art, design, and visual studies. We are open to a wide range of methods and analyses, including experimental writing on aesthetic experiences and interdisciplinary research. We can accept excerpts from larger essays.

Abstracts of Thesis Projects [150 to 250 words]:
Art or design students may submit up to 3 images of their works to contextualize their abstract. Images provided should be 300 DPI.

Submissions should be sent either as an email attachment, or as a link to a Google Drive file to visualcriticalstudies@gmail.com. Writing should be submitted as a Word Document (.doc or .docx) and Chicago style citations are encouraged.

In your submission email please provide a ONE to TWO sentence biography that includes your name, your program, the year of your program (for ex: Third-year student), and a few details about your research interests and/or studio practice.

Every artist has that work that they've lost inspiration for or simply ran out of time to do and never finished; this exhibition aims to shine a light on those neglected pieces. It's a sort of ode to the constantly-travelling, fickle mind of the artist; the unconventional processes; the abandoned. The exhibition also aims to explore the true concept of "finished", and it's finality-how does one decide that? Is an artist's "unfinished" another viewer's "finished"?

Sustainability Initiatives by Student Researchers at OCAD U: Library Research Wednesdays

On January 23rd, we welcome Victoria Gonzalez and Priscilla Lee to share their experiences of participating in field placements at OCAD University with a focus on sustainability.

Project descriptions:

Reducing Hazardous Waste in OCAD U Studios with Victoria Gonzales
Hazardous wastes are wastes that can pose a threat to health, safety and the environment. Plus, its disposal is expensive! OCAD U is trying to reduce the amount of inappropriate materials that end up in our hazardous waste bins (i.e. coffee cups, paper towels, and rags). This project aims to help studio users minimize their production of hazardous waste, encourage the use of less toxic products, and steer them towards proper reuse, recycling, and waste sorting. Victoria used their design skills to help conduct user research involving hardware prototypes, develop new organizing structures to keep the various bins easy to find and in the expected places, and create a poster series to communicate the initiative.

Victoria Gonzales is an emerging Industrial Designer from Chile with a passion for interior, health and sustainable design.

Sustainable Initiatives at Copy and Print Services with Priscilla Lee
Copy and Print Services provides the OCAD U community with its copying and digital output needs. This includes operating the Digital Print Shop and managing the University’s networked black and white printers, and its fleet of multifunction copiers. From pulp to print, paper is the lifeline of their operation. In this project, Priscilla worked to develop a sustainable and responsible outlook on this lifeline and make an impact in reduction.

Priscilla Lee is an Industrial Design student with an interest in human-centred design.


Both field placement projects were made possible through the collaboration of the Centre for Emerging Artist and Designers and the Office of Diversity, Equity and Sustainability Initiatives.


Research Wednesdays is a speaker series presented by the OCAD U Library. It's a forum for anyone (undergrad or graduate students, staff, or faculty) to present in a casual, supportive environment about research activities, collections and more. We apply a broad definition of research which includes a variety of activities within the domains of art, design, libraries and archives. This event is open to all members of the OCAD U community as well as the general public.

Call for Submissions: Black Richness Art Exhibit

The OCADU Blxck Student Association (OBSA) is seeking work from black students, alumni and other artists and/or designers for an exhibition called, “Black Richness: The Untapped Potential of our Ancestry.”

This exhibition will run from 1st to 28th February 2019 and will be on the list of the events that take place as part of Black History Month at OCAD University.

This exhibition will explore themes of Blackness in different parts of the world, Black wealth, employment, culture and tradition, education, the effects of colonialism and how it affects black identities alongside stereotypes of black people, while aiming to celebrate the present. If we must move forward we have to address the past.

From injustice to inequality, “Black Richness: The Untapped Potential of our Ancestry” urges Black artists and designers to think and also reflect on the “what-ifs” of our past.
▪️ What if we were never taken as slaves?
▪️ What if we were never colonized?
▪️ How does that affect us now and how have we as communities decided to grow tremendously with that deeply rooted trauma instilled in us?
▪️ How are we affected physically, emotionally or mentally?

We are accepting works in any medium: Installation, Poetry, Music, Design, Sculpture, Video, Performance, Photography, Material, etc.

▪️ Artists are allowed to submit 1-2 works only.
▪️ Mostly finished works (WIP) will be accepted.
▪️ Send 2-3 pictures of the piece(s) you would like to be considered for the exhibition.
▪️ Photos must be JPEGs OR PDF, including dimensions.
▪️ Include a 250-word artist statement describing your work, in PDF
▪️ ALL Works must be submitted to blackexcellence.obsa@gmail.com

The Deadline to submit is DECEMBER 10TH, 2018.
Accepted applicants will be notified around December 15th.
Completed works MUST be completed AND delivered by January 21st, 2019.
~Due to the nature and subject matter of this exhibition, students that self-identify as Black will be given priority.~

OCAD U Blxck Association is aimed at accommodating OCAD University’s Black community through the facilitation of conferences, events and workshops. Our initiatives are meant to instil a sense of community, raise awareness, celebrate and uplift Black lives in our institution. Our association is currently working on the programming for the upcoming Black History Month where we look forward to student and faculty engagement on topics surrounding being Black in Canada.

We put into the forefront urgent matters affecting the student body, staff and faculty on campus. Some of these issues include (but are not limited to) environmental justice, sexual violence, student poverty and housing, combating racism, as well as decolonizing the curriculum. Through various student-led initiatives, we aim to raise awareness of equity and accessibility issues, and build a strong social justice community on campus.
