More about the film.

Colored Frames is a look back at the last fifty years in African American art, it is an unflinching exploration of influences, inspirations and experiences of black artists.

Beginning at the height of the Civil Rights Era and leading up to the present, it is a naked and truthful look at often ignored artists and their progeny.

About the night's facilitator:
Audrey Hudson is a PhD Candidate at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto (OISE/UT). Her research considers hip-hop as a means of solidarity between black and Indigenous communities, and how this can be articulated into culturally relevant pedagogy. Hudson is an Artist Educator who has been working and exhibiting in Toronto for the past 15 years. Currently, Hudson teaches in the Faculty of Design at OCAD University, where she recently conceptualized and developed a course on the influence of hip-hop on design. About the featured artist in attendance:
Charmaine Lurch creates work that combines wire relief and painted canvases as well as free standing wire structures. Her creative process is both solitary and social. At the heart of her work is a gathering of stories through visual forms and means. Lurch's work is a balance of practice and theory, enhanced by the consideration of the role of the artist in bringing awareness to social and environment issues. The outcome can be seen in her most recent work, which is an installation of giant wire sculpture bees.
Collaboration is an integral part of Lurch’s practice. She constantly seeks to create artistic encounters in the public realm. Her practice as a fine artist, arts educator and children’s book illustrator allows her to interact directly in a number of communities. These experiences unearthed the greater questions if and how these interactions with artistic forms can act as a catalyst for social change.
Lurch's work has been exhibited in both Canada and the Caribbean, including a biennial exhibition at the in National Gallery of Jamaica. website: www.charmainelurch.ca
