O-DAYS! 2016

Monday, August 29, 2016 - 1:00pm to Saturday, September 10, 2016 - 6:00pm

Each year in September, OCAD University welcomes over 1,000 first-year undergraduate students to the community with orientation.

Frosh? Puh-lease. OCAD U‬ does not do "frosh." We do O-DAYS!

While O-DAYS! programming is informative — providing details about key resources on campus and helping you prepare academically — activities are also designed to be fun and inviting, helping build community and connection.

A number of department- and group-specific #ODAYS16 activities are planned the week of August 29, 2016, culminating in the Campus Life and OCAD University Student Union (OCADSU) collaborative BIG-O Day! on Tuesday, September 6, when nearly 1,000 new and first-year #OCADU2020 undergrads will descend upon campus to kick off the 2016/2017 academic year!

O-DAYS WELCOMES NEW STUDENTS TO CAMPUS

You wouldn’t expect OCAD U’s welcome and orientation week to be like it is at every other university, would you? O-DAYS brings all new students together from every program and discipline to connect with each other, be inspired and become a part of the OCAD U community from the outset of their student experience. No other Canadian campus has the godmother of rap on hand, or is hosting an interactive performance art event inspired by reality-TV.

“It’s a celebration that’s unique to OCAD U,” says Brent Everett James, Campus Life Coordinator, Student Success Programs. “Students enjoy it, and our goal is to make it as accessible as possible and accommodate everyone’s needs, including food.”

O-DAYS gathers 1000 to 1200 new students every September for workshops, special campus tours, an introduction to campus services, a community fair, parties and barbecues. It’s the official transition into student life here, whether you’re arriving at university for the first time, or you’re a mature student who’s studied elsewhere.

The main event takes place in Butterfield Park. This year’s Big Welcome Day (September 3) includes a traditional welcome ceremony organized by the Indigenous Visual Culture Program, greetings by Dr. Sara Diamond, the university’s President, a welcome by the OCAD Student Union (OCADSU) and a keynote talk by Lillian Allen.

Lillian Allen, a Creative Writing professor at OCAD U is a multi-talented and internationally acclaimed writer, dub poet and performer and considered the literary godmother of rap, hip hop and spoken word. She’s also worked in film, radio and video, and will be presenting a seminar at Harvard University this fall.

The Student Union Day (September 4) is a full day of activities, entertainment and free food in Butterfield Park.

The O-Team spends months planning and organizing O-DAYS, working together with volunteers from across the university community, student union members and student peer mentors.

Are you a new student? Here’s how to get involved:

-Introduce yourself with a selfie on a Face2Face postcard

-Come out to all of the events! Check out the schedule to find out what’s happening

-Don’t forget to RSVP

-Party at XPACE on Friday, September 6 and enjoy Future Talk, a live reality-TV inspired talk show

-Party with the Student Union on Friday, September 13

-Use the OOOHLALA app to find your way around campus

OCAD U welcomes new and returning students

Students at O-Days 2013. Photo by Sarah Mulholland.

“The beginning of a new fall term is always exciting as we welcome new and returning students to the OCAD U campus,” said Dr. Sara Diamond, OCAD U’s president. “As the university of the imagination, OCAD U’s strengths and vitality springs from the unique and incredible energy and talent that each of our students bring. We look forward to inspiring all of our students to learn and grow on their journeys to becoming the artists, designers, media makers, critical thinkers and practitioners, and the innovators and leaders that our world needs.”

As the fall term begins, O-DAYS is ushering over 1000 new students to campus, and at the same time, the university welcomes back the familiar faces of our returning students.

O-DAYS is a student celebration unique to OCAD U that brings all new students together from every program and discipline to connect with each other, be inspired and become a part of the OCAD U community from the outset of their student experience.

“O-DAYS continues to be a successful collaboration with the OCAD U Student Union,” said Brent Everett James, Campus Life Coordinator, Student Success Programs. “We work together to help make sure it’s as accessible and inclusive as possible, and to make everyone feel welcome.”

O-DAYS kicked off this year with a Compass Program orientation for first generation students, workshops and an annual social for mature students and a welcome reception for international students. The highlight of this year’s events is the Big O-Day (all-day orientation) for new students on Tuesday, September 2, featuring the annual Above Ground Art Materials Fair, Annual Community Fair, O-DAYS BBQ, entertainment and the OCAD U Student Union (OCADSU) Carnival, which, for the first time this year shuts down McCaul Street.

Also new this year are the O-DAYS souvenir T-shirts, available in the Campus Bookstore and at the carnival, a selfie scavenger hunt during the Big-O-Day with chances to win prize packs courtesy of the day’s sponsors and H20 To Go, the City of Toronto water bottle free campaign. Look for the blue trailer to fill your drinking bottles and cups for free.

As in previous years the annual face-2-face postcard exhibition featuring self-portrait postcards by incoming students is on at Transit Space (Level 2, 200 McCaul Street), from September 2 to 12.

On September 3, the first day of classes, the Indigenous Visual Culture program hosts a buffalo lunch in Butterfield Park. Through the week there’s also special programming at the XPACE Cultural Centre, a membership driven artist-run centre supported by OCADSU, a grad student mingle and an OCADSU dance party.
