GradEx 2017 Call for Creative
Tuesday, November 1, 2016 - 4:00am

Open to all current OCAD University students

Showcase your talent by submitting an application to design the creative concept for GradEx 2017. The selected design will be used on posters, the event website, ads and other promotional materials. This is a great opportunity to have your work featured at one of Canada’s largest art, design and digital media exhibitions, and for your design to capture the energy, creativity, and hard work of the 2017 graduating class.

It’s simple:

  1. Send us a written proposal that outlines your approach in terms of design process and inspiration (one page maximum), include your current resume and examples of your work. The selection committee will be judging your application based on your existing work, only.
  2. Three selected students will receive $500 each to develop their approach. Selections will be made based on your ideas, resumes and existing work.
  3. The student whose work will be used in GradEx 2017 promotional materials will receive $2000 for their concept. OCAD U will be responsible for producing the promotional materials (posters, ads, etc.) and will cover associated costs.

Submit your concept by November 1, 2016

For his second exhibition at Jessica Bradley Art + Projects, Derek Sullivan will show a new series of large drawing and fabric pieces. In this series of coloured pencil and gouache drawings Sullivan adopts the poster idiom as a means of accommodating contradictory and changing meanings, as well as minor epiphanies and ephemeral references. In his new laser cut fabric pieces Sullivan mashes up well-known phrases into collapsible web-like sculptures.
For the installation of this exhibition Sullivan will pierce the architecture to create an unbroken row of works claiming the entire west wall of the gallery.

Universal design

“Universal design” is a design philosophy that seeks to support usability for the greatest number of people, including a wide spectrum of age groups and abilities.

  • Universal design principles are broader than those of accessible design and barrier-free design.
  • Products and environments designed according to these principles offer greater safety and increased comfort.
  • They are easy to operate and flexible, thereby meeting the needs of different people.

The seven posters included in this article were created by OCAD University students Yi Lin, Avery McDonald-Heath, Lisa Qin and Samantha Yin. The posters first garnered attention — as well as an “honourable mention” — in the CONNECT: Enabling Change 2014-15 competition. Funded by the EnAbling Change program, CONNECT is an Ontario-wide post-secondary design competition that invites students to explore design that is accessible to the greatest number of people, to the largest extent possible, regardless of age or ability, across all design disciplines.
