OCAD U graduate students receive prestigious national awards

Thursday, April 2, 2015 - 4:00am

The OCAD University community congratulates the students – from five different master’s programs – who have been awarded Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC):

  • Ryan A. Church – Strategic Foresight and Innovation
  • Jason P. King – Interdisciplinary Master’s in Art, Media and Design
  • David Lawson – Inclusive Design
  • Katherine Meyer – Digital Futures
  • Jennifer Snider – Contemporary Art, Design and New Media Art Histories

“These talented emerging researchers are at the forefront of their respective disciplines,” says Helmut Reichenbächer, dean of graduate studies. “We are all deeply proud of their achievements. They are an inspiration to both their fellow OCAD U students as well as to their professors.”

The CGS scholarships offer valuable support to the recipients, furthering their ability to engage in leading-edge research.OCAD U’s Office of Graduate Studies has created a video that opens a window onto four of those projects.

CGS is part of SSHRC’s Talent Program. Its goal is to develop the next generation of researchers and leaders across society, both within academia and across the public, private and not-for-profit sectors.

Catherine and Maxwell Meighen Foundation gift supports student success

Friday, February 13, 2015 - 2:45pm

OCAD University has received a generous donation of $75,000 from one of its top benefactors: The Catherine and Maxwell Meighen Foundation.

This generous gift will be designated towards two areas: scholarships and support for graduates through the Catherine and Maxwell Meighen Career Launcher Fund.

The $35,000 Catherine and Maxwell Meighen Entrance Scholarships will provide financial assistance to the best and brightest incoming undergraduate students, regardless of their socio-economic backgrounds. Covering most of first year tuition and fees, the scholarship will help provide financial flexibility, allowing deserving students to spend more time and energy on coursework.

The Catherine and Maxwell Meighen Career Launcher Fund at the Centre for Emerging Artists and Designers will provide grants totalling $40,000 to graduates of the Faculty of Art as they develop the business and entrepreneurial skills necessary to transition their craft into a paying career. Post-graduation, eligible students can use these funds to compete in competitions, complete a residency, or further the study and exploration of their craft through travel

“Entrance scholarships send a powerful message to an emerging artist, not only confirming their immense creative potential, but signaling that the society in which they live values excellence in the arts,” said Dr. Sara Diamond, President and Vice-Chancellor, OCAD University. “This gift will also give graduating artists the skills and support they need as they set out to start their professional practice.”

The Foundation’s support of the University began in 1990. In 2002 the Foundation donated $50,000 to the Ideas Need Space campaign, as well as the Indigenous Visual Cultures Program. To date they have donated nearly $625,000. OCAD University is immensely grateful to The Catherine and Maxwell Meighen Foundation for their continued support.

About the Catherine and Maxwell Meighen Foundation

The Catherine and Maxwell Meighen Foundation has made an exceptional impact on community and social services and the arts since it was founded in 1959. The Foundation was created with a mission to focus on charitable works in Ontario, primarily through the Salvation Army and the arts.

$3-million gift to OCAD University honours Ada Slaight

OCAD University is proud to announce an historic gift of $3 million from Ada Slaight to fund scholarships, improve studios and student gallery space, and create The Ada Slaight Chair of Contemporary Painting and Print Media, the first named chair in the school’s 138 years.

“This investment is a fitting tribute to my mother Ada Slaight in recognition of her 25 years of volunteering, leadership and advocacy in support of OCAD University. This will continue her commitment to enabling students to excel in their studies and push the boundaries of imagination,” said Gary Slaight, President of The Slaight Family Foundation.

Dr. Sara Diamond, President and Vice-Chancellor of OCAD University, thanked the Slaight family for “a transformative and generous donation that will provide opportunities for students and expand the resources of the university in its traditional strength of studio-based learning in a meaningful and lasting way. These scholarship funds will attract the best and brightest students from across Canada for a generation, creating a legacy of innovation in the name of Ada Slaight.”

The Ada Slaight Chair of Contemporary Painting and Print Media will focus on drawing and painting, printmaking, and digital painting and animation, combining the oldest and celebrated programs at the university with new streams of study. Chairs are the leaders of programs who provide new curriculum and direct student support. Funds can be used for visiting artists, student academic travel, teaching and research.

The scholarship fund will provide full tuition for 36 students, renewable for four years. It will also increase funding for 15 currently funded scholarships established in 2012. The Ada Slaight Entrance Scholarships represent the university’s largest and most prestigious scholarship program.

This support will also improve studios for painting, drawing and printmaking at 100 McCaul St., which together will be named the Ada Slaight Studios.

In a second refurbishment, the newly named Ada Slaight Student Transit and Critique Galleries will provide improved space for students to create and exhibit their work.

FACULTY WORK SHOWCASED IN BIGGEST PROJECT 31 YET

Lot 28: Judgement by John Scott

Project 31, OCAD University's highly anticipated annual live auction features more artworks, and a wider range of disciplines than ever before. Although it originally began four years ago as a 31-piece auction to represent the 31 days of March, this year OCAD U’s award-winning faculty members generously donated a total of 39 works for the March 27 event.

All proceeds from the auction go to support specific areas of need at the university chosen by the faculty members themselves, and this year many of the faculty members selected student scholarships, awards, bursaries, equipment and materials. Gary Taxali, for example, chose to direct the proceeds from his work to life drawing models for illustration students, while Jack Cassady is supporting equipment for the printmaking program.

"Project 31 is a very exciting opportunity for students to see faculty work,” says Katherine Needham, Manager, Development & Alumni Relations Events, and the auction’s lead organizer. “It’s also a meaningful way for faculty to show how much they care about the students they teach, and the students love that. They usually congregate in the gallery and cheer on their favourite works and programs as artwork prices go higher and higher.”

Because it features such a wide range of collectable works at various price points, the auction has proven popular among OCAD U supporters and collectors, whether they’re interested in beginning a collection or are seasoned art enthusiasts. Dr. Sara Diamond, OCAD U’s president, has purchased a new work at the auction each year. In the past three years alone, the event has raised $200,000, and Needham says ticket sales are up, which may make the auction even more exciting this year.

This year’s auction features creations by faculty Barbara Astman, Ian Carr-Harris, Cathy Daley and many others, representing the most diverse range of disciplines yet: Drawing & Painting, Photography, Sculpture/Installation, Integrated Media, Environmental Design, Material Art & Design, Printmaking and Illustration.
