OCAD University is pleased to announce the appointment of Salah Bachir as the University’s Chancellor, effective June 1, 2017.

A successful entrepreneur, Bachir began his career in publishing, and is currently president of Cineplex Media. An avid art collector, Bachir’s diverse collection features many works by Canadian artists and as a patron of the arts, he has supported numerous cultural events, organizations and programs. Bachir is a champion of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) community and has devoted his support to another signature issue – healthcare. He has raised millions of dollars for hospitals in Toronto and has been recognized for his work on behalf of local and international charities.

“We are delighted to announce Salah Bachir as Chancellor of OCAD U in this exciting phase of the University’s evolution,” said Dr. Sara Diamond, President and Vice-Chancellor, OCAD University. “An impassioned patron of the arts and one of Canada’s most influential philanthropists, Salah Bachir’s impact is felt around the world. As well, his commitment to supporting significant social and healthcare issues are both inspiring and fitting, considering our University’s fundamental belief that creativity serves a vital function in society – creative thinkers have the power to develop real-world solutions that will improve and transform lives. I look forward to working with him to further propel our strategic objectives and advance OCAD U’s exciting growth as Canada’s university of the imagination.”

"To be selected as Chancellor of this esteemed institution is an incredible honour for me. I look forward to building OCAD U's international presence, as well as to continue participation in fostering Toronto's vibrant and dynamic arts community," said Bachir. "I am overjoyed to be given the opportunity to help advance OCAD U's already long history of successful accomplishments. As Toronto's arts and culture community continues to make its presence felt at an international level, OCAD U will be at the forefront, and it is a great honour for me to act as its ambassador during this exciting and dynamic time in the university's development."

As the titular head of the university, Bachir will preside at convocation and confer degrees. He will be a member of the Board of Governors, of the Senate and of the President’s Advisory Council. The Chancellor acts as an ambassador on behalf of the institution and works closely with the President in developing resource capacity and outreach activities.

“Salah Bachir is an exceptional leader and advocate for the arts and culture sector. We value his deep wealth of experience in the arts and business sectors and look forward to working with him in the coming years,” said Dr. John Semple, Chair of OCAD University’s Board of Governors.

Bachir is OCAD U’s fourth Chancellor, succeeding Catherine (Kiki) Delaney, who served two terms, the Honourable James K. Bartleman and OCAD U’s first Chancellor, Rosalie Sharp. He is a member of the Order of Canada and holds honorary doctorates from Ryerson University, York University and the University of Alberta.
