Tweetris -- pairs compete in front of a large display to make random Tetris blocks (Tetrominos). A picture is taken of the winner of each round as they make the shape, and this is tweeted to TweetrisTO. Anyone can play a game of Tetris using these Tetromino images in real time on their smartphone or web browser. This was a curated exhibit in Scotia Bank Nuit Blanche on October 1, 2011, and has since been demoed at the Digifest 2011 conference, Dalhousie University Open House, and will be submitted as an art exhibit to TEI 2012. Research is currently underway to examine factors impacting gameplay (setting, audience participation, observation of prior players) over the course of Nuit Blanche.

Emma Westecott

Emma Westecott, Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Design, has worked as a game designer, programmer and producer in a range of commercial, independent and applied research game projects. She is a DFI hire at OCAD U working on new digital media curricula and labs. Westecott has published in the emergent field of game studies and game design research. Emma has worked in and around the game industry for nearly twenty years. She originally achieved recognition for working closely with Douglas Adams as programmer then producer for the best-selling Starship Titanic (1998, Simon & Schuster). Emma directed zerogame studio for The Interactive Institute, an applied games research lab based in Sweden and organised Women in Games 2007 (http://www.womeningames.com). She was a core member of the Synergy games research group at The University of Wales, Newport.

Her research interests include the celebration of digital games as an expressive art form and the potential for practice-based research to extend, enhance and conceive of game form in new and creative ways. Her research focus is centred on the ongoing creative evolution of game form, both in terms of new experience and new human possibilities. This, and the impressive body of work created under her leadership of the zerogame studio in Sweden, brought her to the DFI at OCAD to teach games and develop their games research initiative.

Suzanne Stein

Suzanne is a Foresight Analyst, Mentor, and Educator.

She comes to OCAD University from SMARTlab in the UK where she was Deputy Director and Principal Research Fellow in Technology Futures. She also works with the CFC Media Lab where she holds a Faculty post.  She was formerly a member of Nokia’s Insight & Foresight group, which studied emerging trends and identified new business opportunities created by disruptive technological and market developments.

Previously at Sapient Corporation, a business and technology consultancy, Suzanne was the Discipline Lead for the Experience Modeling (XMod) group in London, where she created and managed this group of diverse social scientists. She was also a Director in the User Experience Group, overseeing Creative development and articulation as well as the Research offerings. Prior to this, she was the Director of Insights and Director of Project Management at Xcorporation, a communications and design firm. Suzanne is a PhD candidate at the London School of Economics and founder of the research company, Everyday Life. She was also the Canadian juror for the UN Task force, the World Summit Awards and has held Mentorship positions with the Interactive Project Lab and various advisory boards.
