Youth Sexual Health Research Symposium 2019

sexual health
Thursday, March 21, 2019 - 9:30am to 4:00pm

The goal of the symposium is to bring together community youth (ages 16-35 who are part of a youth group/organization, not attending University, or would like to get connected with people of similar passions) and university students to share their research and artistic pieces on youth sexual health. In the current political climate, this year's symposium will provide a crucial forum for youth asserting their right for progressive sexual health education. During the symposium, students, youth, academics, policy makers, and community members working in or interested in the field of youth sexual health will be given the opportunity to network and engage in each other’s work. We encourage students from all disciplines and community youth to present research "in progress," test out ideas for a thesis or dissertation proposal, or present original research or artistic pieces.

The Laundry Series by Teresa Ascencao

Teresa Ascencao, Pinning
Friday, March 15, 2019 - 12:30pm to Saturday, April 20, 2019 - 12:30pm

Teresa Ascencao, sessional instructor at OCAD U,  photograph's herself in various interactions with clothing. Each set explores a growing repertoire of body language associated with her struggles with clothing, domestic labour and folk rituals. Second-long automated exposures capture unnoticed and continuously dissipating moments between clothing and the human body – moments known only to the body and the clothing themselves. The moments range from sensual and nostalgic, to strenuous and dramatic. Dressing hovers between sensual play and frantic disrobing to disrupt a feminine identity. Pinning of freshly washed clothing was performed and shot in her mother’s backyard while she watched. Folding of freshly dried laundry piles up against a garden backdrop. Spinning is inspired by my heritages of Azorean folklore dancing and Brazilian carnival. Here, Teresa tied heaps of dirty laundry to my waist while she spun for the camera.

Teresa Ascencao gratefully acknowledge Ontario Arts Council and Canada Council for the Arts, for their support of this project.

BIOGRAPHY

Teresa Ascencao is a multimedia artist whose work examines social constructs of body language, costume, customs, and inner corporeal experiences. Her folk and pop inspired artworks employ concept-related media and technologies that invite audiences to play with iconographies and scenarios involving gender, seduction, consumption, and class. Teresa Ascencao was born to Azorean parents in Sao Paulo, Brazil and immigrated to Canada at a young age. Her work has been exhibited widely in Canada and internationally.

Newfoundland is located on migratory and trade routes that have for centuries linked the cultures and commodities of North America and Europe. Ktaqmkuk (the Mi’kmaq word for Newfoundland) is traditional unceded Mi’kmaw territory that became part of these connecting routes. FLOE (re)considers the history of exchange, while acknowledging the histories and cultures of the Beothuk, Mi’kmaq, Innu and Inuit of the province, through the perspectives of a diverse group of artists.

Participating artists are: Jordan Bennett, Bob Blumer, Maria M. Campos-Pons, Ian Carr-Harris and Yvonne Lammerich, Kym Greeley, Robert Hengeveld, Anna Hepler, Jason Holley, Thaddeus Holownia, Barb Hunt, Mark Igloliorte, Wanda Koop, Meagan Musseau, Sean Patrick O’Brien, Paulette Phillips, Meghan Price (OCADU instructor in the MAAD Program), Jerry Ropson, Camille Turner, D’Arcy Wilson.

2019 curators are: Catherine Beaudette (2 Rooms Contemporary Art Projects), David Diviney (Art Gallery of Nova Scotia), and Matthew Hills (Grenfell Art Gallery, Memorial University of Newfoundland).

“Geodesic, geological, aquatic and structural are terms that describe some of the artworks in Bonavista Biennale 2019,” said Artistic Director and Curator Catherine Beaudette. “Nomad, Afronaut, cheerleader and storyteller describe the artists behind the work. This year’s show promises to be a stimulating floe of ideas.”

Dear AIC Members,

We are happy to invite every country member to participate in the International Colour Day, organized by the Portuguese Colour Association. The celebration is open to those who are interested in sending poetry, as detailed below.

WE CAN NO LONGER LIVE WITHOUT POETRY, COLOUR, LOVE

"We can no longer survive on refrigerators, politicians, card games, crosswords and puzzles. We can no longer live without poetry, color, love" writes Antoine de Saint-Exupéry in Letter to General X, (1943), during World War II. The Portuguese Colour Association, in collaboration with the P’Arte, CEC - Centre for Comparative Studies, the Colour and Light Research Group, CIAUD - Research Centre in Architecture, Urban Planning and Design (both from the University of Lisbon) returns to this idea to celebrate Colour and Poetry, on March 21st, 2019, through a Poetry Reading Encounter dedicated to Colour, starting at 18h30, O'Malta Bistro Bar, Rua Carvalho Araújo, 24 Lisbon.

We invite you to read unpublished poems or poems already published under the theme colour. From this sharing a compilation of poetry will be edited and published after the event.

If you can’t participate in Lisbon, but, nevertheless, you would like to collaborate to the diversity and joy of this event, please send a poem to the email conte.veronica@gmail.com, and this poem will be read in your name.

We wish you a memorable International Colour Day!
