OPPORTUNITY DESCRIPTION

NEO Exchange, Canada’s next-generation stock exchange, have partnered with OCAD U to co-create the NEO Commissioning Program and the Curatorial Coordinator Career Launcher. Five emerging OCAD U artists, working in a variety of mediums, will be commissioned to provide original works of art to commemorate the listing of a corporate client or the launch of a new fund on the NEO stock exchange. The NEO Commissioning Program is seeking a Curatorial Coordinator to support commissioning-related activities and act as a liaison; leading communications between participating artists, NEO Exchange and its listing clients.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Curatorial Coordinator will participate in:

  • Coordinating and overseeing the commissioning program
  • The final selection of participating artists
  • Ensuring that project deliverables and time lines are met
  • Providing creative oversight and ensuring commissioned artworks are aligned to the client’s creative brief
  • Promoting a connective thematic amongst the range of participating artists and aligning the artwork with the individual listing client
  • Contributing a consistent and knowledgeable curatorial perspective to the overall process
  • Arranging for the photo documentation and delivery of completed artworks

RATE 

  • $5,000 one-time project fee

TERM

  • Part-time freelance contract January 2020 - December 2020 (12 months)

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Current OCAD U student or recent OCAD U graduate
  • Experience in curatorial practice or a related field
  • Experience working with artists or artwork/exhibitions management
  • Knowledge of current practices in the proper handling of art works
  • Strong communication skills and professionalism, both verbal and written
  • Strong client management skills• Demonstrated experience with project management and logistics coordination
  • Demonstrated organization and collaborative skills

OPPORTUNITY DESCRIPTION

OCAD University’s Centre for Emerging Artists & Designers and NEO Exchange, Canada’s next-generation stock exchange, have partnered to co-create the NEO Commissioning Program. Five (5) emerging artists from OCAD U, working in a variety of mediums, will be commissioned to provide works of art to commemorate the listing of a corporate client or the launch of a new fund on the NEO stock exchange.

The NEO Commissioning Program will select and retain five (5) emerging artists, each representing a different artistic practice, providing a diversity of artistic voices and approaches to be showcased in the commissioning program. Working under the guidance of a Curatorial Coordinator and responding to a client creative brief, each artist will be commissioned to produce approximately four (4) original artworks over the course of a 12-month period. Artists will receive $1,200 per commissioned work. Completed works will be prominently bestowed to NEO Exchange clients and be cherished with their corporate art collections.

The commissioned work will be proudly featured in NEO Exchange’s promotion of its new listing via press release, social media and email newsletters. The commissioned work (with artist credit) will be displayed in a gallery of NEO listings online at aequitasneo.com and at NEO Exchange’s office.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Each of the five (5) emerging artists will:

  • Based on receiving the necessary information in a timely manner from NEO Exchange, each of the five (5) emerging artists will ensure that project deliverables are met based on a 4 week approximate timeline
  • Respond to creative oversight provided by the Curatorial Coordinator and the client; ensuring commissioned artworks are aligned to the client’s creative brief
  • Provide initial proposed concepts to the Curatorial Coordinator(sketches, prototypes, etc.)
  • Work with the Curatorial Coordinator to arrange for the photo-documentation and delivery of completed artworks

RATE

  • $1,200 per commissioned work (x4 works)

TERM

  • Part-time freelance contract January 2020 - December 2020 (12 months)

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Current OCAD U student or recent OCAD U graduate
  • Experience in producing small-to-medium sized works and working within a set budget in a limited time-frame is an asset
  • Previous experience with art commissions is an asset

DESCRIPTION

The Centre for Emerging Artists & Designers is excited to announce the return of Toronto Outdoor Art Fair Career Launcher award for students in the Illustration, Material Art & Design, Photography and Printmaking/Publications programs. Eligible students will have the opportunity to exhibit in the 59th year of this annual event; Canada's leading juried outdoor art fair. TOAF was established to nurture excellence and an entrepreneurial spirit, and to showcase contemporary work to the general public. This free public event showcases works by over 360 exhibitors and attracts 130,000 visitors each year.

TOAF has always reserved a portion of the Fair to emerging and student artists and is proud to have played a role in the emerging careers of many well-known Canadian artists including: Barbara Astman, Edward Burtynsky and many others. This is an amazing opportunity to get yourself out there, nurture an audience, and sell your work! Student applications will be reviewed by the TOAF jury for final selection.

  • 2D Works – original works that are two-dimensional, created using one or more physical material, including Drawing, Printmaking, Illustration, Collage, and Mixed Media works, etc.
  • Craft & Design - hand crafted objects (functional or decorative) created using fine craft and/or industrial design practices including, Ceramics, Glass, Jewellery, Textile, Wood/Furniture, etc. Multi-disciplinary and/or hybrid practices welcomed. Exclude machine-screen patterns or other forms of mass production, and factory produced wearable items regardless of additional modification.
  • Painting - works created using oil, acrylic, encaustic, watercolour, inks, etc.
  • Photography & Digital Media - Photographic prints made from the artist's original image, and/or digitally manipulated images created from original artist images, and/or other sourced material.

  • Strong graphic design experience

BIO

Michael Madjus has over 10 years of experience in design, marketing, and social media. With a degree in Industrial Design (OCAD University), and having worked with George Brown College, IMM Living, the Children’s Own Museum, and the CN Tower, he helps businesses increase their presence online and IRL in creative ways.

Currently, Michael is working to help advance design culture in Canada as Head of Marketing for DesignTO, Canada's largest cultural celebration of design. Through the Festival, Michael and the DesignTO team turn the City of Toronto into a hub for creativity, making a platform for over 600 artists and designers every January.

Liz Ikiriko is an artist, independent curator and photo editor. Her knowledge as a prairie-born researcher, writer, photographer, teacher and mother inform her practice which is focused on contemporary and historic African and diasporic narratives. She is devoted to the creation of experiential, embodied experiences that utilize accessible platforms to share moments of vulnerability and care for all of us on the margins. Her independent curatorial projects include: The Break, The Wake, The Hold, The Breath (Circuit Gallery at Prefix ICA, 2019), An Archive, But Not An Atlas (Critical Distance Centre for Curators, 2019), and upcoming ___a lineage of transgression___(Artspace Peterborough, 2020). Her writing has been published in Public Journal, MICE Magazine, Akimbo and The Ethnic Aisle. She holds an MFA in Criticism and Curatorial Practice from OCAD University (2019).

Thirza Jean Cuthand was born in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada in 1978, and grew up in Saskatoon. Since 1995 she has been making short experimental narrative videos and films about sexuality, madness, Queer identity and love, and Indigeneity, which have screened in festivals internationally, including the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City, Mix Brasil Festival of Sexual Diversity in Sao Paolo, ImagineNATIVE in Toronto, Frameline in San Francisco, Outfest in Los Angeles, and Oberhausen International Short Film Festival. Her work has also exhibited at galleries including the Mendel in Saskatoon, The National Gallery in Ottawa, and The Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. She completed her BFA majoring in Film and Video at Emily Carr University of Art and Design in 2005, and her Masters of Arts in Media Production at Ryerson University in 2015. In 1999 she was an artist in residence at Videopool and Urban Shaman in Winnipeg, where she completed Through The Looking Glass. In 2012 she was an artist in residence at Villa K. Magdalena in Hamburg, Germany, where she completed Boi Oh Boi. In 2015 she was commissioned by ImagineNATIVE to make 2 Spirit Introductory Special $19.99. She was also commissioned to make Thirza Cuthand Is An Indian Within The Meaning Of The Indian Act by VIMAF and Queer Arts Festival in 2017. In 2018 she was commissioned to make the video Reclamation by Cinema Politica in the Documentary Futurism Next 150 project. In the summer of 2016 they began working on a 2D video game called A Bipolar Journey based on her experience learning and dealing with her bipolar disorder. It showed at ImagineNATIVE and she is planning to further develop it. She has also written three feature screenplays and has performed at Live At The End Of The Century in Vancouver, Queer City Cinema’s Performatorium in Regina, and 7a*11d in Toronto. In 2017 she won the Hnatyshyn Foundation’s REVEAL Indigenous Art Award. She is a Whitney Biennial 2019 artist. She is of Plains Cree and Scots descent, a member of Little Pine First Nation, and currently resides in Toronto, Canada.

Guest Series invites artists, designers and creative professionals who have a specialized practice or area of interest to come to OCADU and give a talk, hold a workshop, studio visits or participate in a class critique. The idea behind Guest Series is to exchange stories regarding professional process and to inform and help bridge gaps in our own individual processes, practices and journeys ahead.

Guest Series is organized by Jessie Holmes, IAMD MFA Candidate at OCAD University and Student Career Ambassador at the OCAD U Centre for Emerging Artists & Designers and Erica Stocking, IAMD MFA Candidate at OCADU.

Long Winter, Toronto’s all-ages, pay-what-you-can seasonal series of underground and DIY music, visual art, installation, reading, food, and dance (and more) have partnered with the Integrated Media and Digital Painting & Expanded Animation program, and the Centre for Emerging Artists & Designers to announce the Long Winter Career Launcher. The exciting opportunity to create new work and participate in a dynamic public event is open to upper year students or recent graduates of the Integrated Media, DPXA, and Digital Futures programs.

OCAD U students and recent alumni are invited to apply for this paid opportunity by submitting a project proposal for a new, or newly updated, digital video artwork. The Long Winter team will provide a lively professional venue and large public audience of 600 - 800 for this commissioned work. The selected work will be featured as a projection in one of two upcoming Long Winter events; held at Workman Arts (Dufferin and Dundas) on Feb. 21 and/or Mar. 21, 2020.

Long Winter’s programming team, along with OCAD U Faculty, will select a winning proposal and The Centre for Emerging Artists & Designers will provide a $2,000 production grant/artist fee towards the realization of this outstanding opportunity.

BIO

Michael Madjus has over 10 years of experience in design, marketing, and social media. With a degree in Industrial Design (OCAD University), and having worked with George Brown College, IMM Living, the Children’s Own Museum, and the CN Tower, he helps businesses increase their presence online and IRL in creative ways.

Currently, Michael is working to help advance design culture in Canada as Head of Marketing for DesignTO, Canada's largest cultural celebration of design. Through the Festival, Michael and the DesignTO team turn the City of Toronto into a hub for creativity, making a platform for over 600 artists and designers every January.

ABOUT THE CREATIVE PROFESSIONAL-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM

The OCAD U Creative Professionals-In-Residence program is a mentorship initiative created to support the career success of current OCAD U students and recent alumni. The program sees invited professional guests, from a variety of art and design-related disciplines, present on a regularly scheduled basis over the course of the academic semester, in the new Rosalie Sharp Pavilion for Experiential Learning at 115 McCaul Street.

We invite students to set up a casual chat or studio visit with our residents to talk about their projects, goals and questions. Visiting creative professionals are alumni and collaborators of OCAD University, invited to provide mentorship to current OCAD U students and recent alumni. This winter’s residents are Liz Ikiriko and Michael Madjus

Current students and grads can use the OCAD U Talent Network to book appointments with our Creative Professionals-in-Residence. To book an appointment, please follow these four steps:

  • Log in at www.ocadu.ca/talentnetwork
  • Complete your personal and academic profile - you will not be able to book an appointment otherwise
  • Under the "Events & Advising" tab select "Workshops & Advising" and RSVP for a date/timeslot with your resident of choice that fits your schedule. The timeslot you select will no longer be available to others once you choose it.
  • Come to 115 McCaul St, 3rd Floor at the time of your appointment
