Students from OCAD U and Ontario Tech University had a unique opportunity to collaborate in a virtual reality design workshop at VRTO – The Virtual and Augmented Reality World Conference and Expo (June 1 to 3, 2019). In addition to student attendees at the workshop, the event included joint OCAD U and Ontario Tech teams of students facilitating, and in some cases leading, sessions. Participants were invited to “jump into the digital human experience,” with no prior experience required. All that was needed was a “willingness to learn and an interest in VR.”

The first workshop of its kind in the partnership, the thirty attendees worked together on a VR development team while designing a basic VR experience using common industry tools and applications. Veronika Szkudlarek, assistant professor in the Drawing and Painting department at OCAD U, led a hybrid painting-VR workshop. Participants used materials and textures to make objects using acrylic paint, canvas and pastels that were then 3D scanned and placed into virtual environments. The juxtaposition between analogue mark-making and the 3D space was explored.

“The workshop offered an important opportunity for students to explore and collaborate on technologies likely to have a profound effect on the way we live and work,” said Alexis Morris, assistant professor in the Digital Futures program at OCAD University, and the Canada Research Chair (Tier II) in the Internet of Things. “It was a great opportunity for creatives and technologists to collaborate on common goals.”

Together with Andrew Hogue, associate professor in the Faculty of Business and Information Technology in the Game Development and Entrepreneurship program at Ontario Tech University, Morris led a planning committee that included faculty from both universities to collaborate on the workshop, bringing a variety of interests to the table.

The workshop also provided an opportunity for organizers to explore the concept of VR developer badges, where a workshop like this one could potentially lead toward a future microcredential in VR development.

Held in Toronto, VRTO is a unique, international exhibition of virtual reality and augmented reality, and a professional conference and solutions-focused symposium exploring arts, culture, society, humanities, ethics and sciences through immersive technologies.

Monday, November 25, 2019 - 9:00am to Friday, November 29, 2019 - 6:00pm

The University of Toronto Hyperloop Team is looking to pair top Engineering talent with exceptional OCAD design and marketing. UTHT brings a new energy to Canadian teams competing in Elon Musk’s hyperloop competition hosted by SpaceX in California. With potential speeds of up to 1000km/h, hyperloop transportation could make travel between Toronto and Montreal less than 40 minutes and zero-emission. Our 80+ competition members are spread across 4 teams with 200+ additional members attending UTHT events and workshops. As members of our competition team, OCAD students would be immersed in a totally multi-disciplinary, startup-like environment, with the opportunity to craft a personalized story and image. OCAD students will also have the opportunity to design concepts for the future of transportation infrastructures, such as pod interiors or Hyperloop stations.

Come work with us! Please contact us at hyperloop@utoronto.ca, and stay tuned for our information session at OCAD this fall.

Design Abroad: Costa Rica Exhibition

Tuesday, November 19, 2019 - 5:00pm to Friday, November 29, 2019 - 6:00pm

The exhibition runs from November 19th to 29th in the Great Hall and features the work of students from across the FoD who participated in the Design Abroad course in May. Their individual projects are inspired by their experiences traveling and engaging in a comprehensive participatory design project with the El Cocal community in Costa Rica.

In May of 2019, sixteen undergraduate design students worked with the residents of El Cocal, a small informal community located next to the town of Quepos, Costa Rica. The focus of the project was working with key residents in El Cocal to co-design a comprehensive waste management solution that would assist the community to reach its goals of protecting the natural environmental and sharing its beauty with its residents and visitors. Using the participatory design process, OCAD University students engaged in systems thinking to develop a robust solution that can be implemented and sustained by the community. This solution provides not only a way to manage El Cocal’s waste, but also provides a grassroots platform to empower community leaders and residents, offers economic opportunities and job creation, and provides a strong visual identity that can serve as a unifying symbol of the strength, beauty, and Pura Vida that is El Cocal.

This project is the result of a partnership between OCAD University and GVI, an award-winning organization that focuses on high-impact and high-quality conservation and community development programs in several countries. In collaboration with the GVI field office in Quepos, the Design Abroad faculty developed the program structure built upon GVI’s long-term, trusted relationship with the El Cocal community. The work the students accomplished in collaboration with the community continues as GVI field staff provides ongoing support to El Cocal residents to implement the waste management solution.

The students’ work in the community and concentrated time and effort on the project acted as a catalyst for this initiative to move forward. Meetings with town officials and other staff in the municipality raised the profile of the project and led to the mayor’s and town officials’ support for the El Cocal community as it endeavours to make the project a sustainable system for managing waste. This is the ultimate goal of the Design Abroad course: to connect OCAD University students with communities to co-design robust solutions and to work with local partners who provide support and help to build capacity within the community to make the projects into viable, long-term solutions.

Contemporary Exhibit By Design Students at the ROM

Tuesday, November 19, 2019 - 5:30pm to 8:30pm

Contemporary Exhibit By Design Students at the ROM on Tuesday November 19th, from 5:30- 8:30 pm. Admission free.

The freedom of personal identity is a powerful tool. It’s also a human right; one that people in positions of power sometimes try to devalue or eliminate. As a group of students, they question why identity is sometimes such a threat.

Reflecting on both their own ethic and cultural identities, and Québec‘s recent secular government legislation Bill 21, the students have designed and made their own ‘identity headwear’ and displays, and will discuss identity with the visiting public in their first and third floor installations at the ROM. You can pick up their display scavenger hunt map once inside the ROM.
