Summer 2019 Issue of She Ji - Guest edited by OCADU Professor Peter Jones

    SheJi - Brain
    Sheji - Peter Jones
    Thursday, October 3, 2019

    The joint editorial opens with:

The emerging field of systemic design has expanded to engage with increasingly important societal issues ranging from housing and quality of life in cities, to foreign policy, immigration, and cultural development, as well as our environments and ecologies. Bruno Latour identifies these as new design issues in his A Cautious Prometheus. He describes interconnected matters of concern, asking on our behalf:

“Why should this prove to be an impossible task? Why can the powerful visual vocabulary that has been devised in the past by generations of artists, engineers, designers, philosophers, artisans, and activists for matters of fact, not be devised (I hesitate to say restyled) for matters of concern?”

Birger and Peter continue in the editorial to review the 5 articles with a “Siskel & Ebert” (movie reviewers) style of argumentation, with ideas and counterpoints for most of the papers, especially the Viewpoint (keynote) articles, which include new works from Richard Buchanan, John Ehrenfeld, and Kees Dorst.

    The collection consists of:

    • Richard Buchanan, Systems Thinking and Design Thinking: The Search for Principles in the World We Are Making
    • John Ehrenfeld, Flourishing: Designing a Brave New World
    • Kees Dorst, Design beyond Design
    • Florian Schütz, Marie Lena Heidingsfelder, Martina Schraudner, Co-shaping the Future in Quadruple Helix Innovation Systems: Uncovering Public Preferences toward Participatory Research and Innovation
    • Evan Barba, Cognitive Point of View in Recursive Design

The entire issue, as with all She Ji journal issues, can be downloaded as Open Access.  https://www.sciencedirect.com/journal/she-ji-the-journal-of-design-economics-and-innovation/vol/5/issue/2

Also, for those who may have missed the RSD5 theme issue the first time it was announced, Peter Jones guest edited the issue from Autumn 2017 (available 2018) based on five top papers presented at RSD5 in Toronto, 2016. The cover image selected for this issue was a course-based synthesis map designed in the course with Jeremy Bowes and Peter (who have an article on synthesis mapping in tis issue). The systems map of Hyperconnectivity was lead designed by Pupul Bisht, with her SFI team consisting of Kashfia Rahman, Ian Prieto-McTair, and Macy Siu.

The articles in this issue consists of:

    • Peter Jones, The Systemic Turn: Leverage for World Changing
    • Eloise Taysom & Nathan Crilly, Resilience in Sociotechnical Systems: The Perspectives of Multiple Stakeholders
    • Mieke van der Bijl-Brouwer, Designing for Social Infrastructures in Complex Service Systems: A Human-Centered and Social Systems Perspective on Service Design
    • Manuela Aguirre, Natalia Agudelo, & Jonathan Romm, Design Facilitation as Emerging Practice: Analyzing How Designers Support Multi-stakeholder Co-creation
    • Tim Tompson, Understanding the Contextual Development of Smart City Initiatives: A Pragmatist Methodology

Former OCADU ED Grads Mimi Vaughan and Alexandra Desplanque Installation at Nuit Blanche!

    Saturday, October 5, 2019 - 7:00pm to Sunday, October 6, 2019 - 7:00am

    The Project

“CONSTRUCTION AHEAD” will be a multisensory installation about Toronto’s history with development—past, present and future. It’s inspired by Toronto’s seemingly constant state of construction. This construction brings short-lived sights and sounds to streetscapes while making permanent changes to the city’s skyline. When participants enter an alleyway off Sterling Road, their physical presence will trigger this audio-visual installation. A combination of ambient noises from construction sites around the city will sound, and corresponding audio graphs will be projected onto brick walls. In this way, “CONSTRUCTION AHEAD” will create an immersive and multi-layered experience that breaks down barriers surrounding private construction and development. Sterling Road and the Junction Triangle are an example of how Toronto is continuing to develop in all directions. “CONSTRUCTION AHEAD” hopes to start a conversation about individual and community power and responsibility in the shaping of our city.

Drake Commissary - located at 129 Sterling Rd. (enter via Sterling Rd.)

    BeeLeaf: A Greener Tomorrow
Jaywhy Kim, Thomas Kim, Sam Chaaya, Greg Moung Geon Choi

The global climate strike of 2019 demonstrated that there is a shared awareness and desire to
reverse the effects on climate change. How can technology be used to harness this desire for
measureable improvements? What if there was a way to seamlessly quantify the environmental
impact of our consumption? How can we incentivize people to make more sustainable choices?
BeeLeaf utilizes emerging and existing technology to empower users to see the impact of their
everyday consumption to encourage and reward greener choices.

We understand that while people want to make and support green initiatives it can be hard to
find the time to research available options and alternatives. BeeLeaf makes this easy and
seamless for its users by analyzing the metadata from their day-to-day transactions from linked
    banking/credit accounts.

With the emergence of 5G technology, banking/purchase can be embedded with additional
metadata such as the individual purchase lines of each transaction, tracked all the way to the
source. BeeLeaf’s access to this information allows it to provide greater context to each
transaction’s environmental impact through analysis of pre-existing data sets on related
environmental statistics such as industrial waste by-products from a cotton t-shirt.

Machine Learning allows BeeLeaf to provide its users with targeted recommendations based on
their transactional record. BeeLeaf’s User Experience was designed to be enhanced as Artificial
Intelligence technology becomes more refined. The 5G speeds will allow Artificial Intelligence to
be applied through an individualized ranking system and individualized standards because a
mother of six is going to have different consumption patterns than a 20-year-old college
student. AI technology will also allow BeeLeaf to anticipate its users’ behaviors to make specific
recommendations targeted to their interests (determined by spend history) as well as
predictions based on past user behaviors.

BeeLeaf highlights the importance of utilizing emerging technology for forward thinking
solutions, such as the implementation of Blockchain for logistics that allow for better tracking of
materials in a production supply chain. 5G network can allow for this extensive data to be
embedded into commercial and individual transactional receipts.

We only have 24 hours in a day. Sometimes the bad decisions seem like the only option or the
only convenient option. BeeLeaf believes that by leveraging data and informing its users that
we can change what is perceived to be convenient. A green lifestyle doesn’t need to be a new
lifestyle or a different lifestyle for individuals. It’s about improving our decision making through
technologically enhanced tools in an ever more connected world.
